The local area guide to living in Machynlleth

Often lovingly referred to by locals as Mach, Machynlleth is a picturesque market town that lies in the Welsh county of Powys. While this historic settlement can trace its origins all the way back to the Roman Era, the first written mention of the town can be found in a Royal Charter that was granted in 1291.

Here, King Edward I granted the then Lord of Powys, Owen de la Pole, the right to hold “a market at Machynlleth every Wednesday for ever, and two fairs every year.” Rather nostalgically, the Wednesday Market still runs to this day! Here, punters will be able to indulge in a range of traditional Welsh food, as well as tasty morsels from French and Spanish food stalls.

Adding to the town’s long history is the fact that Owain Glyndwr – the last native Welshman to hold the title of the Prince of Wales – based his parliament in Machynlleth. This has led some people to believe that the town is, in fact, an ancient capital of Wales. Unfortunately for history buffs, this claim has never been formally recognised.

According to the 2011 Census, there are 2, 235 people who currently call Machynlleth home. This figure represents a growth of just under 100 people since the last Census was conducted in 2001, when it was recorded that 2, 147 individuals resided in the town.

The 2011 Census also revealed that slightly more than 1, 000 households exist in Machynlleth, the majority of which occupy unshared, terraced houses. Homeownership figures are also rather strong, with 32% of residents owning their accommodation outright, while 23% own their property with a mortgage or loan.

Nearby schools

Although Machynlleth does not spoil you for choice, the schools within the town and surrounding area are worthy options. The main school in the town is known as Ysgol Bro Hyddgen.

This newly opened institution covers both the primary and secondary levels, and serves pupils between the ages of 4 and 18. Currently, there are around 540 students on the school’s roll. The school is, in fact, an amalgamation of Machynlleth County Primary School and Ysgol Bro Ddyfi Secondary School.

The year 2015 was the first year that students sat A-Level examinations since the school was opened, with students generally performing well. Of the grades awarded, 75% were in the A* to C range!

Getting around

For those looking to get about, Machynlleth is home to its own railway station – the Machynlleth main-line station. The station sits along the Cambrian Line, with trains being run by Arriva Trains Wales. Commuters are able to travel to Aberystwyth and the Cambrian coast to the west, and Newtown and Shrewsbury to the east.

Machynlleth sits at the junction of the A487 and A489 roads. Heading south-west on the A487, you will be able to reach Aberystwyth by car in approximately 35 minutes – traffic permitting, of course. For those without access to a car, there are also a number of regular coach services to neighbouring settlements including Tal-y-Wern, Aberystwyth and Newtown.

Local shops

A number of quaint stores line the sleepy High Street, with everything from cafes to pubs, book stores, banks and Hospice shops – giving Machynlleth a truly authentic small town feel. However, there is only one supermarket in the town, a Co-operative, so you will most likely find yourself heading there for your weekly shop.

As tourism is the town’s primary employment sector, it is hardly surprising that there are a number of activities and adventures that you and your family can embark on. There are endless mountain biking trails around Machynlleth for the adrenalin junkies, as well as the Museum of Modern Art, Wales for those who fancy a more low-key outing.
